As an idea and as an exhibition ‘Beyond Binaries’ does not imply ignoring critical differences. Rather it facilitates a space for creative expression and public dialogue that is inclusive. It does not ignore social disparities, between who has and exercises economic, cultural and political power, and who has not… indeed the exhibition centres on the creative production of black and female artists, of divergent orientations and persuasions, whilst allowing for representation from ‘other’ groups. This is done in the spirit of affirming the need for inclusive spaces to facilitate dynamic exchange and, ultimately, promote social change.
