William (Bill) Ainslie: 1934 – 1989

William Stewart (Bill) Ainslie was born in Bradford in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Bill Ainslie completed a Bachelor of Art degree 1952 -1955 at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg and a BA Honours in Fine Art in 1956 – 1957 at the same university. After completing his studies, Bill taught at Michael HouseSchool for boys in Natal, Cyrene Mission in Rhodesia, (now Zimbabwe) and King Edwards School in Johannesburg and exhibited widely. From 1976 onwards he initiated various teaching studios and projects including, among others, Johannesburg Art Foundation, FUBA and Thupelo as part of the Triangle Arts trust network. The Bag Factory Studio, Thupelo and Greatmore Street Studios continue from these initiatives.
